We went here on our own in a yellow taxi. No problems as I researched a little first. We paid on entrance and opted for a tour guide. The tour wasn't going in English, we never asked, so we wandered around on our own at our own pace. Everything is posted in English so we guided ourselves, had a really good time and learnt loads. I would still do the tour but save yourself the extra and pay the cheaper price without guide if your Portuguese is not too good.
