Retenue du Gouffre d'Enfer au S-E de Saint-Etienne, Loire, alt. 787 m, presque à sec en cette fin d'été 2008. A sa mise en eau en 1866, le barrage de 52 m est le plus haut d'Europe. Barrant le cours du Furan à 7 km du centre ville entre les villages de Planfoy et Rochetaillée, il est bâti afin de fournir de l'eau potable à la jeune agglomération en pleine croissance, connaissant un fort essor industriel. Rempli, sa capacité nominale est de 1,3 Mm3. Depuis le milieu de décennie 1980 l'ouvrage sert surtout d'écrêteur (retardateur) de crue, c'est pourquoi le réservoir est quasiment vide en permanence, la fonction d'approvisionnement en eau étant dévolue au Pas du Riot, situé 2 km en amont et réalisé en 1878, à 855 m d'altitude.
