Gothic architecture at its most glorious! Sainte-Chapelle was built by King Loius IX to serve as his royal chapel and to house the sacred relics he had acquired, including the Crown of Thorns, the Image of Edessa, and fragments of the True Cross and Holy Lance. The chapel cost him only 40,000 livres, which was a bargain considering that the relics themselves cost him more than 135,000 livres!

The ceiling of the lower chapel. This is where common inhabitants of the palace would come to worship, while royalty would celebrate in the glorious upper chapel. Still, this lower chapel isn't too shabby. The decoration down here emphasizes the lineage of the royal family - golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background to represent King Louis, and golden castles on a red background to represent his mother, Blanche de Castille.
