Gaze into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Mashu from Observatory 1, where volcanic mountains create a breathtaking backdrop for photographers. Soak your tired muscles in the healing waters of Kawayu Onsen after exploring the pristine wilderness of Akan Mashu National Park.
It is a bit out of the way (you would prob need to drive here which is prob why we thought it was mainly for coach tours) but for a large and well appointed hotel it was remarkably good value for the room itself (which was well appointed with lovely bathroom). We chose not to have breakfast or dinner here as that seemed expensive so made do with what we picked up earlier at a conbini on the way here :). There was a nice games area in the hotel basement and we played some table tennis there. It...

This hotel is located just a 5mins walk away from the Kawayu Onsen Station, but more ideal for travellers getting around with a car. Hotel is within driving distance of its surrounding attractions. The innkeeper was a very warm and friendly old man who although could hardly speak any English, won us over with his sincerity, hospitality as well as, his delicious breakfast set.
Onsen facility was rather !old and would have preferred if there were private showers in the room rather than having to...

The hotel was typical rural Japanese, the showers are shared in the onsen area (no en suite). Breakfast was served to you but was really typical Japanese (don't expect western food here).

Not a cheap hotel, but really excellent. The evening meals are a particular treat and although few if any of the staff speak fluent English, we were able to communicate well with all the staff we met.
We booked a superior suite and had a reasonably good view of the lake, booking the next price up and I think you'd get a really excellent view.
Of all the places we stayed in Japan, this was my favourite.

This is a beautiful hotel with great views of the river and countryside. It is quiet and the rooms are very nice. I used the private baths with no waiting. The bar is a great whisky and wine bar. Complimentary ramen was very nice and filling. Other snacks are also given free. Staff were so friendly, and managed around my language barrier with ease and friendliness.

An absolutely incredible hotel set within a stunning forest. You can watch the wildlife from the windows. We saw deer, a fox, birds including woodpeckers, butterflies and stag beetles. The onsen was great, especially the outdoor pool and the food was fantastic

V Nice hotel for the price. Excellent location for Lake Akan, and our room looked over the water. Outdoor bath was nice. Great touch for kids was free soft ice cream machine in lobby from 1500-2000!
Only negative, we wanted to book dinner in the restaurant for next night, were told to tell them next morning and then it was full. Annoying.
