The Berbero-Roman ruins of Djemila (formerly Cuicul) are some of the best preserved in North Africa. The city was built in the 1st century AD by Rome and thrived until the fall of the Roman Empire between the 5th and 6th centuries. The ruins became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
