I wanted to love this hotel. We deliberately drove hours out of our way to stay here. I booked a junior suite for me and my husband (both obviously over 60) for one night in order to check it out. We were given a room in the farmhouse at the top of a steep staircase, notwithstanding the hotel was practically empty. One look at us and the manager should have asked us if we would prefer a junior suite in the stable, at ground level (which are the rooms pictured on the website). The corridor was vintage WWI (I am Italian, so I know), the room and furnishings were somewhat tired and musty--my husband had an allergy attack in the bedroom.
While my husband napped after our drive, I explored the property--lovely gardens, pool area, chapel, and museum in the main building. The staff was not trained to greet me as they encountered me. I did manage to flag a waiter and ask for drinks, and he was very cordial in the event, as he was later at dinner. After dinner, as we passed through reception, there was no one at the desk--the staff were engaged in discussions in a back room and no one emerged to see who was going in or to wish us good night. Having just come from Portrait Firenze--the sine qua non of service--we were disappointed by the lackadaisical approach to guest care here, notably because it was not inexpensive.
