We unfortunately stayed for just one night on Thursday, 23 October 2025, on our way back to Joburg, but it was a truly perfect experience, just as we had hoped. The view was absolutely stunning, and the location is beautiful, safe, and enveloped by a lovely forest. We were overjoyed to receive an upgraded room for our special occasion, celebrating my partner’s 64th birthday, which made our stay even more memorable.
A heartfelt thanks to Christina and Caroline at the Front Desk, their kindness and warm welcome genuinely elevated our experience. We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to making our stay so special and unforgettable!

Durable but lots of room for improvement
Very average stay. Although the staff was friendly and helpful. Our rooms bathroom light didn’t work so they sent maintenance to sort it immediately. The hair dryer in the room was in horrific condition. There’s no mirror in the bathroom but there is one in the room. There was a moldy smell. Only 2 channels on the television.
Firstly, the staff was excellent. The building needs upgrading, as it is in a deplorable condition. We were upgraded to a “suite”, where the entrance door couldn’t be locked, even when we changed rooms, the same problem persists.
There was no water for a while, and although we were informed by a local that the problem was fixed, we were still inconvenienced with muddy, or no water.
Property really needs an upgrade.
Many years ago, before the infamous conflagration that destroyed part of the hotel, I stayed there. Also, every Sunday, my family and I would indulge in tea/coffee with fresh scones, cream and strawberry jam. The bar, then, was most charming. Thus I found my self back at this hostelry, and even the room seemed like the one I stayed in then. Not much has changed. To many travellers, the rooms (I stayed in a Standard room so I cannot report on others) may seem dated - but they are huge! Also, the bed is fantastic! Firm, with good pillows. I enjoyed dinner in the bar and I don't think it has the same ambience as the old one. In the morning, I enjoyed breakfast in the dining area. Here I sampled the English breakfast - and the serving was large, very large. So, that dispenses with the accommodation and the eating. Now the service. Well, perhaps other establishments should send their staff to Magoebaskloof Hotel for training. From the welcome at check-in, to the service in the bar, to the service at breakfast, I found it all exemplary. This is what we know and understand about South African hospitality. By the way, there was no artifice in the friendly attitudes and actions of the staff; I experienced real warmth. In conclusion: I will return to Magoebaskloof Hotel for the comfort and the views and the hospitality.

I'm still waiting for my refund for my cancelation of this booking
Everything is outdated, from the bathroom to the room and also the buildings, furniture in the restaurant and bar area. The tap water was also dirty that I couldn’t even brush my teeth.Disappointed and terrible experience.
I enjoyed the old world feeling to the place as it fits in with the overall being in nature experience. The place does need some upkeep( New carpets and a new cour of paint in the rooms and hallways). The hotel also needs some modernization ( USB type plugpoints,2 point plugs, and fans/ aircons) and repairs to room doors. The restaurant needs a major shake up as the menu is limited, stock is limited and staff is not very attentive.I ordered a breakfast pack as I was leaving early in the morning and although reception took my order and required time the night before, the restaurant nor the reception not open when I checked out.I will be back for a recreational visit..but not for business
This is a superb hotel - everything is first rate from the gorgeous gardens to the fine dining in the beautiful dining room. We loved our stay there. The pool is large so you can actually do lengths and it has a magnificent view from the rooms. The hotel bar is warm and friendly and speaks of a different time. We met the 2 sons of the owner who were terrific. They have a lot of exciting plans for this new family venture and we wish them well and hope to return in the future.
We previously stayed at Magoebaskloof Hotel and reviewed it as an excellent place. That is why we made another reservation. This time the experience was totally different.
The room needs to be upgraded.New towels are needed. Ours were found to be in a bad condition. There was also not cold or bottled water available in the room. Dinner menu was found to be very expensive. We however enjoyed the curry special and an excellent breakfast.
Despite the hotel not being full we were allocated one of the worst rooms in the hotel - our window looked out onto a wall - that had damp patches/damage on it
So we felt we were in a box with no windows.Very disappointing when other rooms looked like they had good views. Cannot understand why hotel wants to allocate such a room to guests when they are not full.
The room was clean, although the decor was dated. The carpet could do with an upgrade.
Breakfast was excellent and the staff were all friendly and professional
Beautiful surroundings and the incredible views and drive in the forest never cease to amaze me! The hotel is old and needs a serious upgrade. Take a drive to Modjadji Nature Reserve and enjoy breathtaking views of the area in a cycad forest that is just heavenly!
Our room was smelly and dark...in serious need for an upgrade. Some very noisy guests kept us awake most of the night.
The highlight is the bar and restaurant. Service impeccable. Ask Smiley in the bar about the fire....amazing gent. Restaurant staff very pleasant, great food.
A great place for a meal, but sadly not to stay.
The Breakfast was great, a point of guidance, do not serve Fish Cakes for breakfast rather Kippers or Haddock. The Evening meal in the main restaurant was over priced and the food very, very, average. On the Sunday evening a choice of only pieces of Lamb or Hake for main course the stir fried vegetables only had Carrots and julienne baby marrow?
The Coffee shop was the best bet, but here, when ordering the Chicken and Mango salad, no Mango, had to a Avo paste. We also ordered the 'Red Wined' Pear slices with Blue cheese and Macadamia nuts, here no Blue cheese supplied with feta and Emmerentia Cheese (I think a light yellow, firm, mild cheese) making the meal bland with a mixture of nuts? Kitchen Management needs to get 'jacked' up!

Sehr schöne Lage. Nur schade, dass das Hotel seine besten Zeiten hinter sich hat. Als Zwischenübernachtung aber gut geeignet
