the toilet seat was broken , when we reported this they said they would inform maintenance, although they had dining rooms we had to go over the road to there sister hotel for our evening meal which we were overcharged for, on getting back to our hotel the toilet had not been fixed and we had to go to reception for a second time , we were told that they would move us to the sister hotel across the road, we had no help in moving just told to go over to the other hotel we were told we could have a complimentary night at another time but were given nothing the bill was not reduced , the toaster at breakfast was broken and they didn't seem bothered to fix it this is not what I expected for the money paid I have had far better service in bed and breakfast

ok for 1 night

On arrival, the hotel does not match the pictures on site. We are still to find the lake with the boats! Staff are ok, but only see two people in the whole building. Went down to the bar, where we were told we needed to use the facilities at their sister hotel, a 10 minutes walk over the road. We arrived back at our hotel room at 11pm, it was so quiet, the receptionist was talking to a “friend” and when asked if we could get a drink we were told “no” whilst he laughed at us. Neighbours were so loud from 7am this morning. Staff knocking on their door to hand things over, with total disregard for other people that were sleeping. I don’t know if it was just a one off, but I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone!

A tale of two halves.

I booked the Windlaestrae hotel (having scrolled past the Green hotel on the list) but yet, when I arrived to check in, I was sent to the Green Hotel anyway. Heather on reception was lovely, good fun and very helpful as were the staff in Jock's bar where I had dinner. The rump steak was excellent as was dessert and the bar has a good selection of drinks. My room was very clean, tidy and comfortable but the bathroom was looking very old and tired with stained grout and flooring yellowed over a long life. Breakfast the mext morning was somewhat disappointing, no organe juice, little left in one of the fruit bowls and the young team, although polite, were not as warm and welcoming as Heather or the Jock's bar staff. When it came to the main event, there was no bread for toast, no plates available and no bacon or link sausages. Overall, the room was decent value for money. I stayed with work but Im not sure I would stay for a leisure trip.

colin

After a small one or two issues, the staff reacted professionally to my issues and helped to resolve them, which I am grateful for, whilst the room does need a little colour in it, it was suitable. Having however to eat at the sister hotel on the night I stayed was a little disappointing, but the service there was fine.

Won't be back

We booked into the Windlestrae both in January and last week. Disappointed to find out on arrival that we had to stay at the greens. No prior warning and was not the hotel of choice. My wife and disabled daughter went to book into the Windlestrae again told it would be the greens. We specifically asked for windlestrae for the spa facilities. No body seemed to give a hoot to the expectations of our needs. Sorry won't be back. This spoiled to presents.

Was average night- nothing special.

Was okay for one nights stay. Negative was the restaurant was over the road at their sister hotel. Also, nobody said you had to manually lock room with key when leaving room which was annoying when returned to room. The shower was and cold due to the pressure build up. It meant you were getting burnt every 30 seconds.

Dined in Basil's , hour and a quarter before we got our starters so missed the first part of the show . Given a complimentary drink then found we had been charged for it . We're told the kitchen was busy with bar meals but the bar was empty.

We were on an overnight stay on our way to St Andrews. Hotel seemed quiet and finding correct entrance was a little difficult. The signage from the main road was small and not lit at all. Our room was spacious and clean but the shower temperature fluctuated, we did then report this. Breakfast had ample choices and good food. Evening meals are across the road at the sister hotel.

Friendly, relaxed hotel,

Very friendly, comfortable hotel with a relaxing vibe. Staff go out of their way to please , nothing is any trouble. Our room was a bit dated decor wise but was spotless and fresh. All in all very good and I will certainly return.

Disappointing

Unfortunately The Windlestrae is a shadow of its former self. Looking very tired & a bit neglected. It's lost its lovely atmosphere. I would not recommend it to others.

Good for golf but not much else to do

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions but on this stay we have found the hotel has made some financial changes much for the worse. At breakfast you had to ask for most things not prepared for the number of people. Evening food you were asked to go across the road to a sister hotel, we had a room that had no cold water and the plumbing was not well making loud noises at all times. There is a lack of leadership at the hotel with most problems needing attention.

Avoid room n° 324

We went twice to this hotel. First time (room 326) nice twin bed (2m wide) : excellent. Second time (room n° 324), small double bed 1500 cm wide. Just horrible!! Impossible to change because hotel full. Nice hotel very calm in the woods.Very good location nearby airport and Edimburg.
