Leiden is absolutely lovely and a perfect option if you don't want to stay in such a busy city like Amsterdam. The transport to and from here is excellent. There's plenty of shops, pubs, places to eat etc. It's very scenic and picturesque.
It's a University town, with, in the Centre, a lot of young people on bikes. No raised pavements there, so be careful of bikes coming from behind you, before stepping out. There are also bike lanes going in the opposite direction on one-way streets.
Excellent rail connections to the places that matter, and the Amsterdam airport (Schippol) in particular.

Coming from the UK, it's great to experience a city that has kicked the cars out almost completely. The city has also great history and other cities and sights are easy to reach by public transport or bicycle from Leiden.
Leiden is a fantastic place and we try to make our base and holiday there every year.
