We went here on the hop on hop off tour, it's a great place for a quick picture but not much around the area. The hop on and Hop off tour waits there for 10 mins so that you can get a quick picture and get back on the bus and carry on with the tour.
Don't go when it's raining - the bus tours are full of people when it's wet so there will be more people trying to look at her, and less photo opportunities.
Try to avoid cruise ship changeover days, it's manic!

Its too small to justify the walk but we saw it from the water as part of a boat trip. Unfortunately it seems even smaller from the water and you only see the back.
Walked to the Mermaid through Kastellet, a surprise and well worth the short diversion. Saw the Mermaid from the path and when on the canal boat - much better view from the path
