Full of character with cobwebs!!

This is a quaint hotel, full of character, in a small attractive village on the west side of Dartmoor. It was particularly welcoming when we arrived in the evening, in thick fog! The bar was busy and there was a huge open fire. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the service was good. The restaurant was adorned with old pictures and photos which added to the atmosphere. On first arriving at our room, the impression was good and very cosy. On closer inspection, we could have done without the cobwebs around the lights and the area behind/under the beds needed a good clean. Amidst the general dust there, was a large chocolate wrapper and a coin! The bathroom was clean and compact but a shelf placed above the small basin made it difficult to clean my teeth and wash my face. The fire door spring on the top of the room door was broken so closing and opening it were a little tricky! Nevertheless, I'd still recommend this reasonably priced hotel for its atmosphere and charm.

Disappointing return

We stayed at the Castle Inn for just one night. Bar staff were very courteous and pleasant. Room was satisfactory but the bed was probably the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in. Hot water was a mere trickle from the handbasin tap in the bathroom. The stair carpet was disgusting and badly needs changing. At breakfast time the coffee served had stewed for a while, My breakfast was not as plentiful as I had hoped for and the bottles of ketchup were all almost empty. The most disappointing aspect for me was the fact that another guest at the hotel was allowed to bring his large dog into the dining room and for a while allowed it to roam freely around the tables. Eventually, the guest was asked to put the dog on a lead. In a country pub such as the Castle Inn, I can imagine that it is quite acceptable to allow dogs in to the bar, but I cannot think (other than perhaps a guide dog) that anyone should be allowed to take an animal into the dining room. Standards have clearly dropped in this hotel as I visited the Castle Inn some five years ago when service and surroundings were far superior.

castle inn

My partner and I had a lovely night at the castle inn made even more special by booking the four poster room which was really theatrical with tapestry on the walls and a fire place (unfortunately not-functional). The whole building is wonky and creaky and WONDERFUL! :) really romantic place to stay and set in a lovely village next to an actual castle (well the remains of one!). Great breakfast in the morning and friendly staff. 5* Only negative is that somebody needs to oil the sign that was hanging outside our window as it squeeked all night in the wind! We considered it all part of the charm tho! Seriously stay here, you'll love it.

Very Pleased

Lovely place, great staff, thanks Lexxi and Lizzie you were great fun and efficient. Food was exemplary and the beers well kept. If we could change something, a little background music in the restaurant and a cobweb brush for the bedroom. Otherwise perfect.
