We were going to camp near the Athabasca Glacier but the weather turned and we didn't feel like camping in the cold wet rain with strong winds. We were able to find shelter and bed for the night at the HI-Beauty Creek Hostel. The hostel was a basic cabin but it was warm and dry so it was luxury for us. And its the location along the Athabasca River and the Columbia Icefields parkway couldn't be beat!
Somewhere along HWY 93, aka, Columbia Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park. Its hard not to stop every few minutes to take pictures of the incredible landscape!
As we were cruising in our rented out Chevy Malibu along the highway, we are rewarded with a view of the snowy Rocky Mountains in the background. Nature never ceases to amaze me. The long winding road continues on as if it took hours, but all of a sudden, we see a herd of cars stopped on the side of the highway. None of us in the car know what was going on. As we approached, we slowed down before parking behind a series of vehicles. The few cars in front of us must have done the same. We got out of the vehicle and walked towards the a group of people, whispering amongst each other and pointing into the trees. They must be mad because I did not see anything for twenty seconds. Then, all of a sudden, we hear the leaves ruffling. There was something in the trees. All I could see was a big dark figure among a dense row of trees. Before I whispered what I think it was to my sister, one of the other observers loudly whispered, "Can you see?! It's a bear!"
