Xeno Hotel Boutique
10/10 Excellent
"The views and property itself is incredible. The staff are very friendly and helpful, most speak English so that helps a lot if your Spanish isn't great. Our only real letdown was that Expedia said this place was "all inclusive" and it is not. You pay as you go and the restaurant, at least during our time there, is only open thru lunch. Their food is amazing though and it's a shame they aren't open for dinner. The staff was very accommodating in helping us order food in and have it delivered. Options are limited in Puerto Angel though. Also of note: dogs. There are many dogs in the surrounding neighborhood and they bark all night long. Can be bad if you're expecting a full restful sleep. Overall great experience though and would recommend to anyone willing to get off the beaten path a bit."

Hotel el Risco
10/10 Excellent
"We wanted a few days of seclusion and Hotel El Risco was perfect for this, It is off the beaten path but in another year or so there will be more connection to this little corner of Oaxaca as the government has ramped up construction on the roads. We came here in off season and were the only guests. The staff primarily speak Spanish but dictionaries and translation apps gave us a great opportunity to communicate and get to know them. Breakfast is based on what's available and we usually had dinner or lunch when we went out. You need a vehicle or taxi fare to help you get around. It is very hilly in this area but we enjoyed the walks down to the beach. The water is rough but if you follow the shore line there are shallower areas to have a nice dip in the pacific and small restaurants to grab a bite. Our room had a view of the ocean as did the dining and rooftop areas. The pool, it was nice but as it is surrounded by trees and plants there are going to be leaves, flowers petal and the odd bug. Everything was clean, there is A/C in the rooms and you can control the temperature. There was drawer and table space and as I had to work one day there the internet service was pretty good. My only thing is like so many hotels I have stayed at recently (in Canada, US and Mexico) the lighting. I usually like a lot of light. I would recommend El Risco as the best place to unplug and relax."
