I stayed at Somerset Palace Seoul expecting a 4-star experience, but it felt closer to a poorly maintained 2-star property.
Arrival was inconvenient—there are three heavy manual doors to get through with luggage and no automatic access. Check-in was smooth and staff were polite, which was the only positive.
Hallway carpets were torn and lifting, and the walls were covered in visible stains. It immediately felt neglected.
It had a strong musty smell, like old carpet and stale air that hadn’t circulated properly. It felt stuffy and uncomfortable to breathe in. When we tried to use the A/C, we were told it was unavailable due to maintenance (not disclosed beforehand). No fan was offered—we were told to open the window instead.
This was not a solution. The room faced a noisy street, and the outdoor air quality was poor. Between the heat, noise, and pollution, it was very difficult to sleep.
The bathroom looked unclean despite being “cleaned”—the bathtub had visible stains and fixtures were worn. Furniture was chipped, walls near the bed were stained, and there were no outlets by the bedside.
Overall, the room felt unhygienic and poorly maintained. We didn’t feel comfortable staying and left the next day after developing coughing.
