We were taken there via the stairs, but later learned there was an elevator that my bother and I (79 & 81 years-old) would use to avoid the risk of falling, made more likely by slippers that kept falling off. Sleeping barely an inch or two above the floor made it a real challenge to get out of bed; you have been warned! Note that there is no small refrigerator or microwave in the room. "Our stay was magical! This was our first experience with a ryokan and also our first night in Kyoto. The staff were very nice & helpful. The shared living space was quiet and clean. The gardens were gorgeous and the food was good. The japanese breakfast was delicious!!!"
