Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) named after its white flower's resemblance to old fashion pants. Because of its flower morphology, bumblebees are the only insect with mouth parts long enough that can reach the nectar. Other insects have developed a cheat method and chew a hole through part of the blossom. Dutchman's breeches is one of many plants whose seeds are spread by ants, a process called myrmecochory. The ants take the seeds to their nest, where they eat the seed's fleshy covering, and put the seeds in their nest debris, where they are protected until they germinate. They also get the added bonus of growing in a medium made richer by the ant nest debris. A newly emerging and not yet fully colored up Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum). When mature the stripes on the spathe will be dark purple almost black. The name comes from the spathe, known in this plant as "the pulpit" wrapping around and covering a spadix "the Jack", covered with tiny flowers of both sexes.
