"Good overall. Toilet seat was not ideally cleaned when we came. TV channels’ quality not great. I also found it surprising that slippers/robes were not available in rooms for free, but one of the staff members was kind enough to give me slippers for free."

"Check-in was good, staff member was pleasant and the room was well presented. Unfortunately the room stank of cigarette smoke and we couldn't be moved to another room. Before I would stay here again I would insist that the room was a non-smoking room, it was truly unpleasant. Nice and simple continental breakfast in a lovely breakfast room with views over the river."

"Grey and depressing decor, long bland corridors We were expecting a lovely authentic style not a Travelodge style. £22 each for breakfast is chargeable, which isn't shown as extra until after booking and is on top of over £500 for a 2 night stay Family room is just a double with pull out sofabed and not very roomy On site parking is £15 per night which isn't indicated before booking. Balcony closed off and unusable couldn't even open the door to it for some fresh air was not told until after booking that there would be work being undertaken but didn't expect scaffolding outside our window and not being able to use the balcony at all. Staff at reception were very dismissive when l complained. I would not stay here again. In fact if I could have afforded to take the financial loss l would have left and stayed somewhere else Luckily the one saving grace is that the hotel is clean."

"Convenient location to the train and bus staions, however, I would not stay here again. I could have stayed at a nicer place for the same price if I had walked another block. The door to the room and the door to the bathroom were both in exceptionally poor condition. The bed was uncomfortable and the carpeting was old. I should have selected a hotel than was centrally located rather than near transportation."

"Overall stay was fab, staff were amazing and the place is very welcoming. We had a spa day and overnight stay which was amazing the only thing I will say is the spa amenities could do with a revamp like the steam room and sauna area"

"The spa was wonderful. The rooms are clean and the staff is very kind. I believe that they want to ensure you are comfortable. But, they are working with a property in need of maintenance. Our air conditioner worked the first night, but the next day we couldn't get the temperature below 24c/75f. After two attempts to fix it, they moved us to another room, where we discovered another guests gift wine, cupcake and greeting. Not a tragedy, but not assuring either. We got our new room pleasantly cool, though the thermostat never moved from 22c/72f. And it was definitely cooler than that. 2 out of 2 room temperature controls malfunctioning. A five star hotel to me, will get the details right. I didn't leave The Gainsborough with that impression, and it certainly wasn't the relaxing few days I had hoped for."
