  • We spent yesterday arvo bush-bashing down to the Zig Zag Railway viaducts above Lithgow, NSW and looking around the place for a few hours. In this shot you can see the No. 1 Viaduct on the Top Road track. A little further down is the larger No. 2 Viaduct. And on the Bottom Road (which is the train line near the bottom of this pic) is the No. 3 Viaduct. Comprising rock cuttings, classical sandstone viaducts and tunnels, the Lithgow Zig Zag was, and remains to this day, a magnificent piece of engineering. Construction of this part of the rail system began in 1866 and was completed by the late 1890s. The line was decommissioned in 1910 with the construction of the Ten Tunnels deviation which is still in use today by state rail. Back in the early 1970s, volunteers worked to bring the line back into operation as an iconic tourist railway which ran for decades, bringing with it tourism dollars to the wider Lithgow area. In 2013, a huge bushfire swept through the area and destroyed a lot of the infrastructure and equipment used by the Zig Zag Railway. Since that day work has proceeded to slowly bring the tourist train line back into operation It is hoped it'll be up and running again in the next year or so. The room was clean, tidy and air conditioned. The shared bathroom facilities was not a problem for a overnight stay. Staff were very friendly and off street parking was great. The local Bowling Club is within walking distance and the area is quiet and peaceful.

Bed was very comfortable. The 2 aircon units didn't provide any heat which was an issue when the temp was only 4; no bath soap, no bath mat, the wi-fi unit didn't work.

We stayed here for 2 nights during our trip to Lithgow. The family room that we stayed in was quite spacious. The kids loved the bunk beds! Toilets & shower were common but were in clean condition. The staff were quite friendly & welcoming as well. There is a Foodworks right next door & other takeout options. Ample parking at the front of the hotel. Overall, would definitely recommend for a short stay.

Country pub that needs a tidy up

It's an old country pub that needs a bit of a tidy up. I had a room with a share bathroom. Decided not to shower in the morning given the dirty state of the shower and bathroom. Pub doesn't open til after check out time so no breakfast onsite that I could find. One upside - staff are good at communicating. Not sure what the picture of the house is on the Hotels.com website - once you book you get a pic of the old pub! Only upside - staff were great at communicating.

Freshly painted, share bathroom, which is why it was a cheaper option. Clean, comfy but please cover the windows above the doors...ambient light floods through at night if you are in the far twin bed, not good for sleeping!

We booked to stay a night on Good Friday. Worried about checking in on a public holiday resulted in making an enquiry with the Pub licencee Stacey who ensured the key would be left in a safe place and ensured our check in was seem less. The pub wasn’t open during our stay but that certainly made for a quiet stay! The rooms are excellent for pub accommodation, warm, clean, quiet and safe. The shared bathroom was very clean and perfectly acceptable for a one night stay. On arrival we made use of the large balcony to have few drinks and a snack before heading to the function we were attending in nearby Portland. The balcony had a BBQ which would be good for future reference and there was also a microwave and other kitchen applicants which would make it handy if you needed to heat up a snack. Definitely a good value location. Not much to do in Wang but it suited our needs and was reasonable in price. The sleep quality was great!
