Several of the islands of the coast, such as Cumberland, St. Catherines, and Sapelo (pictured) aren't accessible by road or bridge, and mingle almost imperceptibly with the salt marshes around them. Sapelo is home to a University of Georgia research institute that was instrumental in the creation of the academic field of ecology.
