needs good makeover

well situated in edinburgh quiet resedential area, hotel in need of a good makeover but kept clean and tidy, nice friendly staff who go out of there way to make everyone very welcome. there is an excellent bus service to city centre at the front of the hotel running from very early to very late .hotel has been taken over by new management so hopefully refurbishment will happen soon ,will return and use again...

extremely kind and helpful

We didn't stay at the Orwell Lodge as we wanted twin beds and they did not have that available. They were sooo helpful and called a sister hotel just a few yards away and we were able to stay there. The people at the Ettrich Hotel were great and I would give them all 5's.

Reasonably impressed

Bedroom was clean and comfortable. Main problem was hearing the air conditioning that serviced the kitchen. Also hearing the party that was being held on the Saturday night. Overall quite noisy.

Basic and correct

Nice breakfast including haggis. It's a bit far away from the centre with no amenities close by. Quiet area. Clean and spacious room, dont expect golden taps. Typical pub with locals.

j'étais très contente, j'y retournerai

L'acceuil était très bien, le personnel est sympathique et toujours soucieux de notre bien être, ils font de réels efforts pour se faire comprendre car nous parlions très mal l'anglais, ils faisaient des recherches pour nous sur internet quand nous voulions visiter une distillerie qui ne soit pas trop loin, d'une grande gentillesse. J'étais très contente pour un hotel 2 étoiles

Could do better

Off to an inauspicious start when chatting reception staff waited 30 seconds to finish their conversation before addressing us when we arrived. We were greeted with "what is your name?", rather than "welcome" or even just "hello". Some other staff more pleasant though. Room smallish but cozy. Hotel is an old building but generally spacious and well maintained. TV in room a bit small and channels not tuned properly. Bed nice and firm + with two pillows each. Cleaning a bit of a problem, no soap or shower gel replacements first day, missing towel next, loo roll not replaced next day. Reception did not answer phone when ringing down about these things. Small things but inconvenient. Door had 1.5cm gap at bottom which allowed in outside noise like reception phone ringing. A wedding reception in the attached function room had loud music until at least midnight on one night. Breakfast was fine though, with the usual cereals and a choice of cooked options from 7:30-9:30. Hotel is a good 20 minutes' march from the main part of town in a studenty area, but is pretty quiet. Plenty of little shops like Co-op nearby, and hotel parking was handy. Good collection of leaflets available with local attractions.
