The lighthouse on Gabo Island guards the eastern entrance to Bass Strait in #Australia. It is an active navigation lighthouse and weather station for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. It was built in 1853 from red granite sourced on the island. The wind blew down the windbreak wall, so buttresses were added for stability. We went to the top for perfect 360 degree views on a blue sky day. Access to the island is generally by boat and one can stay overnight! #Hiking #Blue #Outdoors
"Blue Sky" Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve is operated by Parks Victoria, who can be contacted for overnight stays in the Caretaker's accommodation. Chance Brothers & Co. - Lighthouse Engineers & Constructors from near Birmingham, England commenced building the lighthouse in 1860. Great spot for seeing wildlife out the window. We saw 2 kangaroos and a black snake. The rooms aren’t very sound proofed so we could hear those in the room next to us showering and listening to music which is a shame as it’s so peaceful in the surrounding area.
