It's uphill. Very uphill. Take a bus or go slowly and have a few rests going up. The path at the top is steep and slippery in the dry. I wouldn't risk it when wet. Castle itself is OK, but the view from it makes it great.

Free entry after 2pm on Sundays. Great views across the city from here, and a good strenuous walk up the hill to get here, but not much inside once you've arrived.

Would get the number 35 bus from the main promade up the hill (1.80 euros) as the hill is really very steep, then walk down the path beside the kiosk at the Castle down to the Alcazaba. Path down is very steep twists back and forth and is all old fint flagstones (some were slippy with wear). Views are well worth going up to see. Information kiosk at Alcazaba/Roman ruins/entrance to path up to Gibralfaro Castle was happy to give directions to bus stop and gave us a bus timetable. Bus stops have electonic signage and bus was easy to identify.
