The area around Koggala is one of the best places on Sri Lanka's south coast to see traditional stilt fishermen in action. This famed practice has become one of the most distinctive sights of Sri Lanka. It started just after World War II, when the rocks and shoreline became too crowded so as a result fishermen started using the ship and aircraft wrecks to fish. This developed to fixed stilts in the shoreline for fishermen to use and pass on to the next generation.

"We had originally booked South Point Cottage but didn’t end up staying there – the owner has a few properties and we were placed at South Point Abbey instead. The Abbey is a gorgeous old colonial villa right on the ocean, with four big bedrooms that could easily fit two families. The walls are built from coral stone, there’s a lovely pool, and you have direct access straight onto the beach. The staff were fantastic – they took care of everything and cooked the most amazing Sri Lankan...

"The villa was in a fabulous location right on a beach with clean, golden sand. The villa’s bedrooms were spacious, clean and each had its own on suite. Our extended family of 14 enjoyed the deck near the large swimming pool and also the deck chairs near the water. The staff looked after us like royalty and the chef and kitchen staff cooked us some delicious food. All in all we had an amazing week at South Point Villa and I thoroughly recommend it as an excellent place to stay."
