We drove the Ypres Salient in the Flanders region of Belgium to visit the memorial sites from World War I. Of particular interest to us were the Canadian memorials along the way. The Brooding Soldier was the most poignant memorial we came across. The imposing granite statue faces the same direction where the first German gas attack took place. 2,000 Canadian soldiers died in this area. It is as if the soldier stands guard over the fallen men of combat.

Langemarck German cemetery,Ypres Salient Flanders. This cemetery contains the graves of 44,292 German soldiers. The picture displays a mass grave containing 25,000 soldiers. In the background, is a sculpture of four mourning figures by Professor Emil Kreiger. Also contained within the cemetery is a concrete blockhouse, where Private Frederick Dancox won the Victoria cross. #OnTheRoad
Langemarck German Cemetery Flanders. Containing the remains of over 44.000 German soldiers. The stone crosses are symbolic and do not contain burials. The flat stones signify a resting place, sometimes containing eight people. As the Belgians were very grudging after WW1 , to give up any land , for the Germans. #OnTheRoad

The bunkers at Essex Farm Cemetery are the location where John McCrae wrote the famous poem, "In Flanders Fields". The bunkers were used as makeshift hospitals where Lieutenant Colonel McCrae tended to the wounded and dying soldiers of World War I. The cemetery adjacent to the bunkers is the resting place for over 1,000 soldiers of the Great War. The youngest soldier, 5750 Rifleman V.J. Strudwick, aged 15, lies to rest in the cemetery.
