Vườn quốc gia Liwonde

Nestled in the heart of Liwonde National Park, this gorgeous lodge offers safaris on both land and by boat along the Shire River. The lodge itself sits on the banks of the river, so herds of elephants coming down to drink is a common sight.

While visiting the park, ask your guide (or drive yourself if you're doing it independently) to head to Livingstone's Baobab. At the northern end of the navigable section of the park, this is the very tree Dr. Livingstone camped under during his exploration of the African continent. The tree is so old it has hollowed out, so you can step inside and look up at the sky through the trunk!

Come to Liwonde National Park in October-December and you'll be sure to spot the teeny vervet and baboon babies! At first they stay clinging to their mothers, but after a few weeks they become more adventurous and curious! The vervet monkeys at the lodge are used to humans, so you can actually get quite close - just don't feed them as this can cause problems down the line!

During the rainy season, storm clouds often roll across Liwonde National Park in the afternoon. Make sure you take cover as they move a lot faster than you would expect! Rainy season in Malawi usually starts sometime in November and lasts several months.
