This tulip, the Caroussel, was just one of 800 varieties growing in Holland’s famous Keukenhof Gardens. The gardens were a photographer’s dream, the place sublimely beautiful and serene, not to mention colorful. Before my visit to the Netherlands, I had no idea the regal tulip, synonymous with the province of Holland, was behind the first major financial bubble in history. Known as Tulip Mania, the Dutch went gaga over the prized Semper Augustus tulip with its midnight-blue petals topped by a band of pure white and accented with crimson flares. As the story goes, circa 1624, the price offered a merchant in possession of this unique flower exceeded the annual income of a skilled worker. Tulip Mania peaked before the crash in the winter of 1636-37 when a rare Violetten Admirael van Enkhuizen tulip bulb sold for 53,000 guilders, the currency for the Netherlands from the 17th century to 2002. We had the most amazing time in The Netherlands (our 17th country) with 4 of our best friends this spring. We happened to be in Amsterdam at the same time the annual tulip festival was going on and took a day trip out to Keukenhof. Not much else like it. #lens4change
