  • This will ever be known as the chateau of Josephine Baker. She had been a singer of international renown with an extraordinary career. Born in the States in 1906, she emigrated to France and became a citizen in 1937 when she married a Jew, but not before knowing the street life in America where she’d had to sleep in cardboard shelters and scavenge in garbage bins. For ten years she was the lead in the Folies Bergeres, and admired by all who saw her. Shirley Bassey once said, “I swear in all my life I have never seen, and probably never shall see again, such a spectacular singer and performer." During WWII She won the Croix de Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. When the Germans invaded France she moved to the chateau where she helped Belgian refugees and ultimately adopted 12 children. She was the first Afro-American to star in a major motion picture (Zouzou) and was the only female speaker in the civil rights march to Washington with Martin Luther King and was offered the lead in the movement when he was assassinated but she declined. When the builders refurbishing the chateau sent her almost broke, Grace Kelly, a close friend, offered her accommodation on the Riviera.

These are lovely people and it’s a beautiful located property. If you are from the UK or US the owners both speak amazing English and will make you most welcome. Two nights wasn’t enough, but we were unable to extend our stay as it was fully booked. Would love to come back one day.

Stéphanie et Fabrice sont de très bons hôtes et profitez d'un vol en mongolfière avec eux car Fabrice est un pro ! Nous avons fait un vol tout à fait mémorable dans un cadre spectaculaire. Leur maison d'hôte est très jolie, chaleureuse et suffisamment grande pour profitez de coins tranquilles en fin de fournée ! Stéphanie saura bien vous conseiller afin de vous guider dans votre visite du très joli Périgord Noir. Merci à vous deux

Excellent séjour

Excellent séjour chez Stéphanie aux Hauts de St Vincent pendant 2 nuits. Cadre superbe avec vue sur le château des Milandes. Chambre joliment décorée dans des tons bleus, salle de bains spacieuse et une literie de grande qualité. Nous avons profité de la table d’hôtes, le repas servi était très bon avec des produits de saison et locaux. Merci à Stephanie pour son accueil et sa disponibilité, ce fut très agréable. Je recommande totalement cette guest house.

Great stay

Very nice guest house. Check in is at 5pm. Stephany was very hospitable. Good breakfast, I could only comment that including some protein, like eggs or cold cuts would be be appreciated. bedroom very comfortable , access to a nice living room with fireplace was great. Recommend this guest house as a great stay..

Beautiful guesthouse in Dordogne River valley

This is an amazing guest house. Stephanie and Fabrice (who pilots hot air balloon rides) provide a welcoming and personable experience. We participated in their Table d'Hote twice because it was such a wonderful experience with great homemade food, local wines and lively conversation with guests from England, Germany, and the US. This is a recent remodel of a farm house with remarkable views overlooking the Dordogne River valley. Multiple chateau, and beautiful medieval villages within 5 minutes drive. We would return in a heartbeat.
