Hotel has outgrown its beauty from the past.

Noise level is excessive from the third floor down. People who travel are not at all aware of time to be quiet either by strong footsteps to furniture movement at 1130 pm to 1 am. Parking is not secures outside of the building. Gravel are is not lit by nighttime. Breakfast was ok.otherwise my wife and I will not be back even after renovations in 2018.

English Country Manor with Canadian Hospitality

An opportunity to stay in the Victoria area after an Alaskan cruise had me searching to find suitable accommodations for my wife and I. We were looking for something comfortable but classy, without being uptight, representative of "west coast experience". The English Inn fit the bill. It is in a quiet area of Esquimalt, right next door to Victoria. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. They are not "fully modern", with all the latest features such as built-in USB charging ports. But the WiFi is fast, our room had the appropriate amenities, it was clean and had true character and feel of being at an English Manor/Inn. I cannot speak about the TV and services available since I didn't have time to turn it on. There was a TV and it was very modern. The mornings had a great start with a continental breakfast "European style" that included home made croissants which were a delight on their own. We had an unrushed but comfortable start to our mornings at the Inn, and at night were able to relax and unwind in its rich surrounding. The staff was very helpful and gracious, which added to the charm and enjoyment of our stay there and in Victoria. The pictures speak to the character of the Inn and what the rooms are like. For an authentic visit to Victoria and the surrounding area, the setting of the English Inn and its staff are a credit to and great ambassadors for Vancouver Island.

Old English Charm

The staff was very accommodating and friendly. They made the stay special. The hotel itself is outdated and needs the facelift that is scheduled in October. We loved the neighborhood and access to downtown Victoria and the local parks. We enjoyed our stay.

Didnt even come close to expectations! Was told our room was there "crown jewel" ! No way . Didn't even have coffee cream or a a/c! On our 5 day trip it was the second worst place to stay and the most expensive!!!

Interesting character hotel

Old english styled building making for a character style hotel Found staff friendly and helpful Some furnishings a bit old but believe the hotel is getting a refurbish at the end of 2017 so this will make it much better A little away from the town center but as we had a car there was no issue for us

Great staff

The overall experience was great. Jay, the general manager for the hotel, was absolutely awesome! One girl was on her first day and she was great, very professional. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from the beach which was perfect. Great place to stay!!

A fine place to stay in Victoria area.

The Inn was fine. It was in a nice neighbourhood. My room was clean and had the usual amenities. There was no place to work on a lap top in the room. The staff were friendly. Due to the age of the building, electrical plugs are at a premium. I did find an extension cord in my room which I assume was meant for plugging in phones and laptops. The only suggestion I have would be that the music downstairs either not be turned on until maybe 8am or kept low (background noise), I was regaled with rock a bit too early for my liking (7:30am). And the music clearly heard in my room late at night. I did hear someone complain around 10:30pm and the music was either turned down or off. I don't think the staff realize how the sound travels up the staircase.

Beautiful mansion and gardens. Friendly staff. Breakfast a little limited. Coffee was a little cold. Nevertheless, the beauty and serenity of the place was worth the visit. Would come again.

Noise issues

We truly loved this beautiful old mansion/hotel, the staff were very nice, and the room was huge, clean and nicely furnished. BUT.....the floors are wooden, and the guests staying in the room above us walked like they were large land animals all evening, and everything they put down on the floor, as well as the walking, made a LOT of noise. We could not sleep until THEY finally got into bed and STAYED there! We do understand it is an old building, but noise insulation or floor noise reduction retro-fitting NEEDS to be done. Or one must insist on a top floor room, though since there is no A/C in any rooms, in the Summer they are stifling hot until sundown. All in all, we still enjoyed the stay for 1 night.

Erg mooi hotel, rustige locatie goed ontbijt

Erg leuk hotel, net een oud landhuis. Prima ontbijt met verse croissants. Ontvangst is heel vriendelijk. Kamer misschien wat verouderd maar erg ruim en goede bedden. Mooie tuin, zelfs herten gezien. Hotel ligt op maar minuten met auto buiten Victoria centrum

The Once Grand Old English Inn

My room had dust bunnies under the table holding the telephone. Unfortunately, it was very noticeable. The coffee maker in the room had not been emptied and there wasn't any powdered milk. There was lots of sugar or Splenda but I don't use any of these products. When I arrived back at the hotel it was after 9:30. I knew I couldn't get in the front door so I went around to the back. It was very dark(black) but luckily there was light around and over the door. Still, it was very unnerving. Once inside, I was hoping to get a drink of water. In the past a fresh, cold jug of water with ice cubes and slices of lemon and fruit was situated in the lobby but there was nothing to drink. There weren't other people around, either staff or visitors, so I felt like I was all alone in the place. A bit like staying in a haunted house really. I have stayed at the English Inn before and enjoyed my stay so I hope that it will return to it's former pleasant state. The breakfast was great and the staff was friendly and helpful. Also, despite my negative review, I did like staying at the Inn and will be back!

Beautiful hotel well situated

We only had a two nite stay but the scenery and grounds of the hotel are fantastic. We even got to see a family of dear (stag, doe and fawn) in the garden in the early morning.

Renovation needed

The building has definite Victorian charm but in need of maintenance . The mattress we had was worn, definite hole and appeared to be 2twins pushed together. The towels were old , rough and small. The front grounds were unmaintained, many weeds. The backgrounds were beautiful . The breakfast was good and the employees we had contact with were very pleasant. The room we were assigned had a claw foot tub that appeared dirty and when I tried to step out the tub is not secured and started to tip... very unnerving. When we first entered our room I did go down stairs to ask if we could check out a different room ... it appeared there were vacant rooms. But the man in charge said there was nothing else( Tuesday night) so we just made the best of the situation. We really feel given tender love and attention this could once again be a great property. It is our understanding they are about to close for A major renovation - until then you might want to consider another property or be specific about which room you are assigned. Other guests we spoke with said they had better accomendations than we did .
