While Abdij Sint-Sixtus is closed to visitors, nearby café <a href="http://www.indevrede.be/" rel="nofollow">In de Vrede</a> is a great place to visit for tasting the Westvleteren beers. You can also purchase a special gift pack with a Westvleteren beer glass and all three beer types, to bring home.
Sunny evening at In de Vrede to try Westvleteren 12...claimed to be one of the best beers in the world! Made by Trappist monks, they only make enough to ensure their way of life so you can't buy it to take away, you can only drink it on site. They also produce a medium and a blonde beer. The beers are vegan-friendly :)

The bunkers at Essex Farm Cemetery are the location where John McCrae wrote the famous poem, "In Flanders Fields". The bunkers were used as makeshift hospitals where Lieutenant Colonel McCrae tended to the wounded and dying soldiers of World War I. The cemetery adjacent to the bunkers is the resting place for over 1,000 soldiers of the Great War. The youngest soldier, 5750 Rifleman V.J. Strudwick, aged 15, lies to rest in the cemetery.
