"It’s a good idea to message the hotel beforehand to reserve the onsen on the evening you arrive; we were lucky that there was a spot available, but you will have no problem getting a spot any other day. The onsen is such a nice way to unwind after a long day of exploring this gorgeous mountain area. Yoi tabi wo!"

"Beautiful, the in room onsen was amazing and the room was awesome. Great staff. Great location. Wish I could stay for longer- perfect to break up the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Make sure you arrive early- all of the attractions close around 5 pm, which I didn’t realize, but the staff stored my luggage while I went to explore on check out day. The only thing that wasn’t amazing was dinner, but I didn’t go for one of the higher priced wagyu steaks. Otherwise , a perfect stay."

"We wilde graag een verblijf met een privé onsen, dus boekte deze Ryokan. We werden welkom geheten en werden naar onze kamer begeleid (in het bijgebouw). De Ryokan is hier en daar wat minder goed onderhouden en het ruikt wat muf. Vooral veel beschadigingen op muren etc. waardoor het er wat minder verzorgd uitziet. "Our stay at Hakone Kowakien was wonderful. Just to clarify we stay in the Hakone Kowakien Hotel. (Not the Ten-yu) I notice there were mix up of reviews when I was researching the hotel before our trip. The area around the hotel are breathtaking and the grounds beautiful. "Clean and spacious room. The beds on the floor were not very comfortable, especially the pillows. Staff was very helpful in making arrangements when possible although they did not seem to know much about the Five Lakes area. Overall if you are interested in Hakone/Gora this is a great property. "

"Overall, the stay was disappointing. On the positive side, the onsen was lovely and the attendant on the ladies side was very helpful. That said, nothing is available until 3 and you have to rush to make an on-site reservation for the open air area after 3 (there was not an option to reserve prior to 3). The front desk staff provided inconsistent information on check in and was initially unhelpful in storing luggage that did not fit in the automated storage machine. Bottom line, do not arrive...

"Very modern, clean and comfotable, with inroom onsen and sauna with red light and outside footbath in every suit, even a telescope and a projector. The only downfall is its not walking distance to any stores or restaurants you need to take a cab."
