Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa
4/10 Poor
"On arrival I enquired about room service, the lady on reception informed me that it has been cancelled for tonight and the restaurant was fully booked and hopefully I could get a meal in the lounge bar if they could fit me in or alternatively order a kebab to be delivered to the hotel.
I then asked the question about the above, which the receptionist replied we’re mainly a golf destination. There’s only three people staying outside the main Golf group and you’re one of them so our main business is golfers.
My point to her was why couldn’t the hotel of let the people know especially with them just being three of them me one of them by email or phone call to say that the Restaurant was fully booked. The room services have been cancelled and you might be able to get a meal in the lounge as I would’ve eaten somewhere else before I arrived at the hotel if I knew how busy it was.
I did manage to order in the lounge a couple of minutes before a member of staff came in and said no more orders to be taken the head chefs says,I’ve got in there by literally a couple of minutes the food took a while to arrive and half of it was cold on arrival, which I didn’t bring it up and eat it anyway because of the time it was and I was hungry by that time.

Crewe Hall Hotel & Spa
2/10 Terrible
"I turned up to be told they had overbooked and had no room for me. I asked why no one had told me but got told there was no contact details on the booking (a lie). The staff member at the front desk simply did not care. They then told me they had a room available only for an extra £200. I was shocked and appalled at the attitude. I had driven 3 hours and told them this and got no more than a shrug in return. Appalling and will never stay here in the future."

"Excellent stay, and reception staff were fantastic when I requested to upgrade my room."

De Vere Cranage Estate
8/10 Good
"The gym and pool were good but busy. It's a walk out of town, maybe 20 mins walk to the train station. Very nice staff, bar staff were particularly friendly and welcoming. Had a minor cleanliness issue with my room. They didn't correct it and didn't offer any recompense for it. Not my hair on the chair!"

The Chester Grosvenor
6/10 Okay
"Booked for 1 night stay whilst in Chester, check in was smooth and very friendly staff on reception. We requested a late check out of 1pm and this was accommodated without any issues. We were escorted to the room which was an Executive room but it was extremely dated and curtains needed to be fixed (which we did ourselves). The bathroom had silicone everywhere and just needed to be brought up to date. Did not look like the photos on line at all. It was clean overall and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and all of the food was fresh although the restaurant furniture where we were sat did have cosmetic issues with damaged sofas that were ripped etc. Following breakfast we went back to the room but were startled by the fire alarm which was a test but we were not advised this during check in.
At 11:30 the cleaning staff pressed the door bell and entered into the bedroom despite a late check out being booked. When we advised we had a late check out booked she left but then proceeded to bang the hoover against the door and was rude to us so much so that we packed up and left the room and the cleaner was rude once again! We did make a complaint to reception on check out who did credit the late check out fee but this kind of treatment from the cleaning staff at a hotel of this rating is really not acceptable and tarnished our stay. In essence the hotel could be out of this world but it needs investment and better cleaners!"

Village Hotel St David's, Nr Chester

"Nice hotel, would stay again. Good helpful staff."

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Spa Chester
10/10 Excellent
"Hotel is lovely and clean. The staff are very friendly. The only problem is you have to pay for the gym and Paul separately. I think it was £20 for two hours."

Holiday Inn Runcorn by IHG
10/10 Excellent
"We had a late arrival 1am after our flight in to Liverpool. Two guys on reception with the warmest welcome you could wish for. The room was small but ok. It had a sofa bed in it that the hotel had made ready even though I rang to say we only need the double bed not the sofa too. This took up so much of the space it was cramped even for just two people how you would expect more people to be comfortable is beyond the imagination. Breakfast staff were pleasant though the breakfast wasn’t up to much. Hard rubber eggs well done bacon cold mushrooms. The lady on reception when we checked out was very pleasant. "
