"The room was nice & clean , a bonus was the air conditioning as it was hot weather . We also ate evening meal there which was ok , breakfast was plentiful with a good choice . We only stayed one night on our way to Scotland & our daughter & family met us there to complete the journey . What was nice was that they were able to park & use the hotel for food / drinks etc . Thankyou we appreciated that 😊"

"Perfect hosts, friendly greetings on arrival and managed to check in half an hour early. A few tired areas in the Buck Inn which could do with freshening up but appreciate it is an old listed building. However this didn’t dampen our stay. Comfy bed and nice clean linen and towels. A great hearty breakfast in the morning set us up for the day ahead. Would definitely return again."

"Farnley Tower is a very attractive building in a lovely location, easily walkable (but be aware that Durham is VERY hilly) to and from the city centre, the cathedral, and the castle/university campus. I’ll say up front that we are somewhat more critical than most because we travel full time. This stay was the second-last in 5 months of continuous travel, and we’d had many, many excellent stays against which to compare it. Our first impression was that Farnley was lovely, but unloved. The manager, Anna, who is fabulous, and a fount of information about the area, quickly dispelled that notion. She and her staff responded to every single one of our concerns quickly and patiently, and resolved those that they could. Scratchy linen sheets (in what we learned was a hypoallergenic pet-free room)? Changed for smooth cotton. Way too few electrical outlets? Power bar supplied. Filthy portable fan (needed on hot nights with no AC)? Immediately taken away and cleaned. Breakfasts were good, with yogurt, cereal, oranges, apples, and juices self-serve, and hot options customizable and cooked to order. Anna had lots of gluten-free and dairy-free options for those who need or prefer that. There was plenty of hot water and good water pressure in the bathroom, and the bathroom fittings were modern. The independently owned on-site Indian restaurant Holi & Bhang is outstanding. I don’t think it’s a 10/10, but a solid 9/10 is deserved."

"The hotel still looks great from the outside. The bar, lounges and reception looking modern and clean. But the room I had felt dated and in need of a fresh decoration. Wallpaper coming lose on the ceiling. Floorboards lose. Bathroom you could see sealant had been applied many times around the bath to stop leaks. I may be looking at the details to much, but newer hotels you do not see any repair jobs. Breakfast was great as well. Just needs some TLC in some of the bedrooms, to bring back to the high standard you expect from this hotel."

"We booked the cottage and were so glad we did. The photos although good, don’t really do it justice. The bedroom opens out onto a spacious balcony with good quality wooden table and chairs. The view is very serene, as you can see the river. The hot tub is really amazing. It was very clean and we were shown how to use it properly. If anything it was a little hot at 40c. It kept this heat for several hours. Bathroom was beautiful. Living room immaculate. And a 2nd bathroom with toilet and shower. Alison warmly greeted us on arrival and her partner Andrew helped out with showing us the room. They are both extremely friendly, polite, professional and hardworking people. We had one meal in the restaurant. We ordered the halloumi sticks for a starter and they were absolutely divine. My friend had the stew for her main and I had the Yorkshire pie pudding. They were both seasoned well. The meat was tender enough for me and it was plentiful. The Yorkshire pudding didn’t taste like a Yorkshire pudding. Or a pie. It was quite tough and quite tasteless. Which gutted me because it’s one of my favourite things to eat. The prices were reasonable. The wait time for the starter wasn’t bad, at 25mins, but we waited for the main for a long time. About 1.30hrs after ordering. Which is too long to wait, but apologies were made. I suspect this is understaffing. Overall we absolutely loved our stay! We wouldn’t hesitate to come back. It’s set in a beautiful location, which is quiet and pleasant."

"Check in was great. My daughter loved the colouring books. 😀 The family room was nice and spacious and clean. My daughter found the sofa bed to be a bit on the hard side but was fine once we padded it out with cushions. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast where there was plenty of choice. We will definitely be back. "
