1856 US Gov't decided to use camels to move freight and people across the American Southwest... Hadji Ali (affectionately called Hi Jolly) a Syrian caretaker was hired for the job.

This is the monument in Quartzsite AZ in memory of Hi Jolly.

The Civil War began and the project was abandoned.
The camels were set free to wander the Arizona desert
