After taking a 4.5 hour bus ride to Mokpo from Seoul, then another 2.5 hour ferry ride, I’ve finally arrived at this beautiful little island of Hongdo in the Yellow Sea, way down southwest of South Korea. The island only has a population of 710. On Hongdo, meaning "Red Island" due to the red coloring found on many of the rocky outcroppings, there are about 270 varieties of evergreens and 170 species of animals. The government wished to preserve the natural state of the island so Hongdo was designated as a Natural Preserve Area in 1965, and became part of Dadohae Marine National Park in 1981. Because the entire island of Hongdo is declared a Natural Monument, no one is allowed to enter areas other than the villages and designated tourist areas.
Hongdo Island, known to be one of the most beautiful remote islands in the Dadohaehaesang National Park, which is the largest national park in Korea, which expands across seven coastal areas in the South and West sea. The rocky, diminutive (6.47 square kilometers) Hongdo, with its killer sunrises and wealth of peculiar rock formations, has been likened to a flower floating on the water. Named for the crimson light that envelops the entire island at sunset (hong is Korean for "crimson") I hiked up about half way to the summit of Gitdaebong mountain, for this gorgeous view (my precious pic shows the other side), which was pretty much straight up (there’s a nice wooden staircase leading up to a few viewpoints along the way), only took about 20 minutes for a 650ft climb. Didn’t get to do the full hike because I had limited time but I’ll be back! 😊
