To put my comment into context, I am a solo traveller relying on public transport or taxis to get around whilst at a destination. Unfortunately, I didn’t realise at the time of booking how remote and isolated Oceanfront Vacation Rental is if you do not have your own car. I have communicated to the owners that the property is more suited to families or groups who have their own transportation. For me, the property was completely unsuitable and wish I knew this beforehand, so I’m writing this for future solo travellers. If you fall into that category, simply do not book! Stay in Hilo instead. There is nothing at the oceanfront vacation rental (no food, drinks (apart from chilled water from the fridge), restaurants, shops...nothing!) It was difficult to get a phone signal and Uber does not come out this far. Once there, you’re stuck there if you’re not willing to pay around $50 taxi to get back into Hilo.
The rooms themselves are dated and worn. The seating is old, mouldy and ripped. The bed was comfortable enough but I don’t know why it was about 4ft high...don’t fall out! Dust on everything which suggests poor cleaning. There are fans but no air conditioning. The bathroom was fairly clean but out dated. I suffered about 15 insect bites in one night of sleeping there. The phone number to contact the management did not work. In the end, I had booked three nights but only stayed one. The management did not offer a refund.
