"Nice enough room, great location and excellent staff, comfy bed, only issue was a bad smell that came from the drains, the staff were quick to spray the drains for us but it only temporarily masked the smell. Didn’t affect our stay massively but would have been nice to not have an odour. Would still recommend for a short stay in sandakan!"

"This place hasn’t been touched since the mid 1980s - thick dust and cobwebs everywhere, and the entire property smells like it hasn’t seen fresh air for decades, including the room. I would encourage any tourists to avoid Sandakan in general, as there’s nothing to do, and just base yourself in Sepilok. If you have to stay in Sandakan, only stay here as a last resort."

"It's a piece of luxury in an interesting place - don't let the exterior building fool you. You can be walking into another world in Sandakan and Hotel Sandakan is a sanctuary amongst it. The staff emulate the local Sabahan hospitality and friendliness, I will stay again next time."

"For the area of Sandakan that this hotel is in this is a pretty good option if you really have to stay here! I would not recommend the area at all. The staff here were very attentive and friendly. The room was adequate but the pillows were horrendous! Just lumpy lumps of hard sponge! "There are improvements being carried out, which will make a difference in the future. We were unable to get the advertised wifi at all, despite the router being reset many times. This was annoying. On four occasions we had random people enter our room without knocking, which was not okay. Once guy even got cross with us and said we should have locked the door. "Staff are exceptional - friendly, kind, helpful. There's nothing fancy about the place, but nothing fancy is needed, given the surroundings. I especially enjoyed my balcony with the fan. "Filthy… beds have yellow spots that are like pee all over. Nothing like the pictures. Cleaned Bathroom looks like only splashed with water. "
