After leaving Digby, NS, driving 40 minutes, surviving the sharp turns, and taking two ferries you will discover Brier Island. This island is small, but packed with great hiking and rock jumping. Not many tourists or Nova Soctians make their way out to the island, and that's a shame because it is worth the trip.
The next day we went whale watching. I have been whale watching 4 times in my life. All 4 times The best we saw was a hump a mile or two away. Here, even though we were weeks after the season had ended and the whale should have been heading south, we saw about 14 whales. Some of them came within feet of the boat. One even turned over and watched us watching her. It was a great experience and one I would highly recommend.
Around about the 7th whale I was thinking I would not see more than a hump, but then this mother just popped up right next to us and then waved goodbye as she started a deep dive.
Pond Cove, Brier Island. Most people visit Bier Island for the excellant whale watching, but the draw for me was the chance to hike 20km around the coast of the entire island. A full day of coastal scenery, with the ocean never out of sight? Yes please!
Western Light, Brier Island, Nova Scotia.
