"I was at a lovely room with plenty of space and good amenities but the shower head was mouldy and mostly blocked. It is a nice place and something like this really made the visit less enjoyable."

"Nice stay with friendly staff and the food was great. Our room was clean, the bed was comfy but it was extremely dated, the walls were also really thin, could hear everything in the adjoining rooms. "

"Lovely house in a great location. Rooms were large, comfortable beds. The staff were very welcoming and even folded our clothes for us in room service. Could do with a little paint here or there but overall a great stay"

"We were met by an extremely cheerful and helpful member of staff at reception and for the rest of our stay, this was the case with every member of staff we saw or were served by. The room was clean and cosy, a bit of a walk from reception but that's no issue, and it was really quiet, considering we were at the front of the hotel, we heard nothing from the car park. Good coffee and tea making facilities and plenty extra coffee teabags etc at reception to help ourselves to if you needed more. Lovely Borders biscuits too, the only thing missing was a bottle of water. This wasn't our first visit. We decided not to use the pool this time but I had a lovely walk around the map of Scotland and found another part of the estate with a beautiful old Victorian gazebo. Our steaks were cooked as we requested and our starters of scallop and black pudding were excellent. We weren't seated on top of one another for dinner either, which we really appreciated. Breakfast was piping hot, I chose to pick my own from the good choice off the hot buffet with the best bacon and links sausage I've eaten in a long while. My husband spoke to one of the waiters and asked for poached eggs, not on the order menu, but which again was met by a smile and was no problem and arrived perfectly cooked. The loyalty app is a good addition and we look forward to staying again. A lovely night away. Thank you."
"On arrival the foyer area looks very nice and modern. We had plenty of time to look at it as there was no staff on the reception desk. We pressed the ring doorbell style button and waited for a few mins as other staff buzzed around without acknowledging us. Eventually 2 people came to reception and we were checked in by a distracted individual.
My first comment on entering the room was 'corporate'. Basic and functional. We were pretty close to reception on the ground floor and it was a very noisy evening. It quietened down just after midnight. We also had to contend with noisy TVs from other rooms late into the evening. There was a random dirty spoon in our room on the desk and the bath tub moved when I was taking a shower and the TV only worked once during our stay. There was also an early morning fire alarm which sounded for 30 seconds then stopped.
The food is the thing that resulted in the stars for this review. The dinner menu was varied and the food was very nice. Very quick service. Under an hour for all 3 courses but their alterior motive was to get the table back which they quickly told us the second we finished our desserts.
Breakfast was also very good. Basic cold selection but the cooked breakfast was very nice.
Staff across the venue were very hit and miss. Some were brilliant and taking pride in their work. Others just gave you the impression you were an inconvenience for them.
Unfortunately wouldn't stay again."
"The hotels.com website advised secure parking was available. This was not the case. Parking was not specific to the hotel we had to park in the general motorway services area. I was also surprised to have to pay an additional £5 a day for this unsafe parking. I did not know about this charge prior to arrival as it is hidden in the hotels.com small print which you have to click on several times before you can see it. I was advised that parking is free if you book directly with Days Inn."
"These are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Rooms are nice, clean. Restaurant has great food. Staff is very friendly and will go out of their way for you. I would highly recommend The Old Schoolhouse. I will definitely stay here on my next visit."
"Not being able to charge to the room is a real pain and puts me off visiting hotels. Like the last Macdonald hotel chain I stayed at this week week the food selection was minimal but the quality was good. "
"The food was very good and plentiful. Breakfast was filling and delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Only thing we would say, is that the room and bathroom needs a little bit of TLC. Other than that, the room was spacious and well equipped. The bathroom too was large with thoughtful extras in place. Unlike most hotels, the Balmoral did not just have a couple of sachets tea, coffee, milk and biscuits, they had lovely tubs of them, plus a jug of milk in the fridge!! Top marks for that. "
"The room was very comfortable decor delightful.
Staff very welcoming and helpful. Our golden retriever loved all the attention and treats
Breakfast was a feast of choices. The lunch and Main menus also were varied and tempting.
Free car parking.Scenic walk close by."
