"This hotel is a good value. Situated off the main walking street, nighttime noise is remarkably mild (tourists familiar only with the *reputation* of Bui Vien understand the significance). It's the little details like the owner smoking in his own lobby, taking his tea there, generally occupying more space than the guests-- details that keep the property in the range of Tourist Stopover rather than destination.
