Thurber began as a company-owned town. The Texas and Pacific railroad owned the mineral rights to the vast (and only) bituminous coal
deposits in Texas, and lured thousands of skilled coal miners from the north and from Europe to get it out. Setting up a small settlement ringed by tree-covered hilltops, Thurber, which was named after one of the majority shareholders in the company, quickly grew as
businesses set up shop.

Restrooms a little small, sometimes slightly noisy outside environment due to the place being next to an intersection. But if you’re just looking for a comfortable bed with hot showers, great a/c, cable tv, and parking right in front of your room, all at the best price you can find in Stephenville, this is your place. "We decided to stay here due to reviews and we were not disappointed! The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and the king bed was comfy. They offered a variety of pillows which was nice! If they are too thick, one just has to untuck the end and shake it good. Problem solved. NOTE: The only downside was the night clerk , changed us from handicap accessible to a regular room without asking first. I did not want to make a fuss, so we accepted it. I have PSa and a handicap room is such a help to me. One review complained about not being upgraded to a suite. If you want this, then do not book online call the hotel and book directly. Then ask for an upgrade at the desk. Online booking CAN NOT be changed. Someone also complained: Water smelling like sulfur. Yes, it does and NO it is not contaminated. There are no lakes in this area to gather water. This city and others around it run off well water. YES, it is treated and you should smell it before it is treated. Not nice. It is okay to drink and bathe in and no you do not smell like sulfur after a shower, just soap. Speaking of which, they offer a lovely specialty soap to bathe with and Dove shampoo conditioner and lotion. Breakfast was nice and hot! They has a free “Continental” Breakfast, but it is really a full breakfast. Make your own waffles; Belgium and State of Texas. Syrup and butter. Two kinds of cold cereal. Juices. Milk.Eggs and Sausage. Muffins, make your own toast. Yogurt, fresh fruit. Coffee; regular "
