Polite and helpful staff, there was an excess of wonderful food and a great view. Our room was clean and spacious but a little dated with an unusable stove that could be removed for luggage storage. The 3 baths were all well kept and felt quite private, 2 are outside. I Recommend driving here, there is a great waterfall not far but otherwise mostly farmland within walking distance. I would love to visit again

A beautiful Ryokan. We were welcomed with kindness and hospitality. They brought our luggage to the room, provided us with yukatas and offered amazing traditional food. The private baths were the highlight and we will miss them greatly. Highly recomend.

Highly Recommended for a Traditional Japanese Stay

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. It was my first experience at a ryokan. Mainly chose this place because it is reasonably priced with private onsen and shower. The ryokan has both public and 3 private onsen. The private onsen goes by a simple manual reservation system by writing your name on the whiteboard outside the onsen if the onsen is not available. As the ryokan is not very big, there are not too many guests, it isn’t hard to book the private onsen. There is a sink and toilet in the room. Room size is sufficient for 3 adults and was well equipped with amenities, it was also warm and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner was provided in the room price. Food is served at the common dining area (not in the room), but even at the common dining area, there was privacy screen that split the area, giving each group privacy. Do note however that you will need a vehicle to get to the ryokan as it is in a mountainous region and nowhere near the train station.

The onsens are amazing and we did enjoy using them a lot during our stay. Especially the outdoor one provided a fantastic time, the peace and quiet of it makes you feel renewed extremely quickly. The food was interesting - and plenty of it! - and it provided a nice insight into a traditional dining experience. The hotel, however, is quite old-school and could definitely use a facelift by now, I think the pictures have been edited to make it look more modern. Having said that, I think the remote location and the calmness it offers really make up for it, sleeping on the floor on a Tatami with an open window, with only sounds of nature coming in, was absolutely fabulous after the overwhelming few days we had at Tokyo and Kyoto. The only odd thing was being charged additional tax at check out even though our reservation receipt clearly stated we’ve already paid it.

根曲がり竹の炭火焼き

食事が大満足でした。特に炉端焼きがとても珍しく、美味しかったです。そのほかの品も手の込んだお料理だったと思います。団体客の方が一緒でしたが、食事場所や入浴時間が重ならないようにご配慮いただき、ゆっくりと温泉を楽しむことができました。 お部屋はバス・トイレなしの小さめ和室プランを選びましたが、二人なら問題ない広さで、トイレも風呂も部屋のすぐ前にあり、コスパがとても良かったとおもいます。

義母と夫と伺いました。お部屋をグレードアップしていただき、ありがとうございました。お料理も大変美味しく、親孝行できました。ただ、岩風呂の温度がいくらなんでも低すぎる。もうひとつの内風呂は入り損ねましたが、夫はサイコー、と言ってました。 温泉の質がとてもよく、しっとりとしすべすべになりました。 お値段以上のお値打ちのお宿だと思います。 お世話になりました。

Charming ryokan in the mountains of Nagano

Ryokan Warabino is a charming ryokan set in a little mountain town in Nagano. We stayed two nights, and to our surprise, they changed the menu the second day for us. The food is fantastic, healthy fare. If you're planning on staying just at the ryokan and not leaving during the day, make sure to bring lunch, as there's no other food around except for oyaki (steamed buns filled with vegetables, fruit, etc) at a place next door. There are three onsens on the property. Two are free: a rock bath and a wood bath with outside view, with each assigned to men or women for half the day and then switching. There's a private onsen outside that you can rent for 40 minutes for an additional fee. Water is clean in all of them. There's also a public onsen right next door, which you'll get tickets to when you check into Warabino. Highly recommend checking out the public onsen as well, as it has nice outdoor views. Make sure to bring your room towel and soap/shampoo from the lobby when you go to the public onsen. The ryokan is a bit difficult to get to, but they have pickup and drop-off service from the nearest station, Suzaka. It snowed the whole time we were there, so we didn't do much exploring of the local towns, but it was lovely nonetheless. Note: There is no private shower in the room, even the rooms which do have a bathroom. You need to use the showers attached to the onsens regardless of the room you choose.
