  • A photograph of the famous Tori gate in the water on Miyajima Island. Very easy access to the beach - just watch out for the deer. While I was taking this picture a deer was going through my camera bag and heading off down the beach with one of my filter holders. A fantastic island for photographers and tourists in general and well worth an overnight visit if you're going to Hiroshima, as it's only an hour away, and free to get to if you're on a JR rail pass.

A Hidden Paradise in Suo-Oshima

I’ve stayed here multiple times when it was called the Sunshine Resort. Recently, they renovated this property and it is back to its original splendor. Definitely book an executive level room with the beach view and outdoor tub if you can. There is a free drink and appetizer lounge for executive level room customers and other perks. Ride the bikes around the island. Beautiful property and surroundings.

This was by far the nicest room/resort we have stayed in. After being cramped in many Japanese hotels and ryokans, this was much much larger with three queen/full size beds, a 65" TV and an outdoor bath (mineral salts available in the lobby). However, please understand that as this location is very remote, dining options in the area and transportation may be limited. This may be why we didn't see any foreigners there? However, they do provide pick-up service to and from the Shin-Iwakuni station depending on the room you're staying in given you contact them at least three days in advance. Although our Shinkansen was unexpectedly delayed by two hours due to rain/lightning, they patiently waited for our arrival and did not leave us stranded. Perhaps the only downside was that we only stayed two nights as I felt we could've done with some more downtime and taking advantage of the amenities including the bikes and SUPs. I hope to return again soon, staying for a longer time next time. Thank you Marissa Resort for giving us an incredible and memorable vacation!
