The staff were lovely, and the breakfast was excellent for the price. The girl at the bar went the extra mile to prepare a delicious gluten-free breakfast for me, which I really appreciated. The family room was clean and very spacious. Overall, it was exactly what it promised and very good value for money. The location was great too.

First, the staff - all of them - at The Channings, were superior. Friendly, helpful, accommodating, and willing to go out of their way to help. You won't find better, imo. Next, The Channings is a lovely building, inside and out. Built in 1865 as a lavish home, it retains much of its original architectural beauty - plaster moldings, lovely staircase, beautiful floors, stained glass windows, and gorgeous woodwork. The beer garden is spacious and there's plenty of seating, though it's all picnic tables, which can be difficult for some people. The food was delicious and well-presented. I didn't have a single complaint about any of the meals there, and I had at least one breakfast, lunch, or dinner every day of my five day stay. After the beauty of the rest of the place, the rooms were a let down. Yes, they were clean. Housekeeping did the best they could. But my room, at the very top of the 47-stair ascent (no lift), was actually depressing, It started with a sloppy paint job on the walls and trim, in colors that looked dingy. A ceiling fixture's repair showed expandable foam bulging all around it. Tatty curtains. No chest of drawers, or even a table to lay out my suitcase. Two tiny 2-shelf night stands were it & a narrow closet with too few hangers. Worst, the bed was hard as a plank. No kidding. Pillows too. No peaceful sleep for me. Shower was DANGEROUSLY slippery, no grab bar and no non-slip glazing on the floor to help. So, great place to eat, but not to stay.

Good value room above a pub conveniently located

We stayed at Channings because it was convenient to visit family in Clifton. Rooms were fine for our needs, wifi was good enough for work-related video calls, continental breakfast was good. Staff were helpful. Since the rooms are above a bar, we were not surprised by typical noise from downstairs, and it did not affect our ability to rest and sleep.

Overall poor wouldn’t stay here again. Positives the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel and rooms are dated and not very comfortable. For the price I expected and could put up with that but there was no hot water. Even in a cheap hotel I expect to be able to have a shower!

Sad, attic room

Towels were good but hand towel had a hole in it. Staff were friendly. If you want to travel back in time to a shabby, doleful BnB but pay extra then stay here. Don’t stay in Winter, the window doesn’t close (or open for that matter). I expected more for the price.

The Channings

The location is good for Bristol, the hotel room was at the top of the building, very poor ventilation and although a fan was supplied, the room was very hot. Hotel room was very basic. We didn’t have the breakfast ,coffee was just a pot of filter coffee. The room seemed quite shabby, although was clean and the mattress comfortable.

Needed to be near Clifton and City centre so this ticked both boxes. The hotel/pub was comfortable with tea/coffee making facilities in the room which was replenished daily .Check in/out was easy and the staff were friendly and efficient. I was able to walk to Clifton village and Bristol city centre..As a female solo traveller I felt safe and would definitely use again

This was a great location for us. It is only a 10 minute walk to the heart of downtown Bristol. We booked the family room. It offered plenty of space for my daughter and me. Around the corner is a GREAT sandwich shop called Sandwich Sandwiches. They close around 3pm so don't miss out on one of their freshly made masterpieces! 10 minutes away are lots of restaurant options for quick grab-and-go options. The hotel staff were awesome! I had a really long day of walking up and down hills and really needed an ice bath. The lady working the desk hooked me up and gave me a big bag of ice....very cool!

room was clean . Bathroom, bath and basin very clean. Towel rail missing from wall. The basin tap hot and cold indicators are worn off and should be replaced with new ones costing a few pence. Wood chip wallpaper not very attractive but probably hides poor plasterwork. The mat/carpet at the entrance to the bar/dining area is GRIM. This should be replaced as soon as possible as it does not give a good impression of cleanliness. It is a popular pub and restaurant and I had a good overall stay.

Was Ok

Arrived and waited arou d 10-15 minutes for check in member of staff was looking to see where the lady was & unable to locate her. Was advised we were on the top floor....attic room was average size, very warm window opened slighly, view (brick wall) not great. Fan too small for room, tea/coffee etc supplied no option for cows milk or alternative. Shower was nice, water pressure was good. Was located right by the door on top floor so heard the door open everytime & people walking pass. Had food in restaurant was warm not hot.
