But then was told by reception staff that, because I booked through Expedia, I was not entitled to a water bowl or bed for them - which I would have been had I booked direct. Madness. Also not impressed with car parking - run by an ANPR company with hefty fines, even for hotel residents."

"Good free breakfast for all guests although we were charged extra by Expedia which was annoying. Dated decor in the rooms but clean bathroom. Our room was very cold and the heating only worked intermittently (we turned the radiator to full but it came on for about an hour one night and roasted us on the final night, two other nights had no heating at all). Parking was ok but we got the last available space on a couple of days after going out… I think you can park in the approach road for free...

The only thing I can mention negatively is that Expedia has the walking time to Durham down incorrectly. I think they meant it is a 13 minute drive not a 13 minute walk. "The thermostat to the radiators didn’t work so we couldn’t turn the temperature down and were therefore uncomfortably hot and got limited sleep. The mattress added to the lack of sleep as it was very uncomfortable. The door to our room you could close from the inside with a hard shove but you couldn’t close from the outside so we couldn’t leave anything valuable in the room. "Definitely not a 4 star property. It was decent but not great. It is the only place I've ever stayed where the wifi signal doesn't even reach the 2nd floor - we couldn't use it at all. The floor squeaked and creaked with every step. I understand that it's an older building but it wasn't ideal."
