"We use the grand hotel every year and have done for 17 years now. The last couple years it's got more strict and not really family friendly. Room had a window but not allowed to have it open and the temperature was extremely hot. We ordered food (takeaway) and got told we had to eat this in our room. I tried to explain how hot the room was and no where to eat this except sitting on the bed. They didn't seem to care. I asked for 2 extra pillows and a extra fan just to try and circulate some air....

"We were able to get into our room early which was a bonus. Room itself was clean and comfortable. Bathroom was nice and shower was great. We opted for the included breakfast option which was really good. Hot and cold items and lots of selection. The location of the hotel was perfect for us. We were able to walk to almost every place we wanted. It is also on the City Sightseeing red bus route (between stops 5 and 6) which we took advantage of. "The pool is payable and really naff. It costs £20 for 2 adults and 2 kids (both under 5). Food is good and breakfast was good too. Room decent but incredibly hot."

"The room was clean and spacious with a king-sized bed and a beautiful walk-in shower. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The hotel itself was just a short walk to the York Minster and the city walls. Would definitely stay there again!"

"One night stay for a visit to Open Air Theatre. The Clifton was well located and although we couldn't get a space in the car park we were given a on street permit to use. Room was a small double, was ok for our needs."

"We stayed over for the concert at the open air.
The hotel was clean and well maintained- all the staff were polite and friendly. Our room was clean. The bar was lovely and the restaurant and breakfast was perfect.
The en-suite was very small but clean.
The only thing that would have meant full star rating would have been a better parking arrangement, - a quality mattress and blackout curtains. That being said we would definitely stay here again."
