"This hotel is bordering on the line of uninhabitable. On our arrival the weather was hot, we were given a room on the 10th floor, when we got there the door to our room was wide open and not locked. The room was around 40 degrees and I would argue unsave to be in for any prolonged period of time. The windows could not be opened, there was no air conditioning and the fan in the room didnt work. The bathroom was even hotter, with large windows with no curtains, making it basically an oven. When we approached reception and ask for a room on a lower floor (even said a downgrade would be fine) we were told they were fully booked. They were quick to change that answer when I pointed out the multyple rooms avalible for booking online for that night. We were given a room on the 3rd floor, the room was far cooler, however the bathroom had a radiator that couldent be turned off (great in a heat wave). Also the curtains were to small for the windows meaning regardless we couldnet get full privacy. Finally the entire hotel is aged and disgusting, my advice to everyone would be to just pay an extra £20pp for literally any other place in cardiff. Actually just sleep in your car, itll be better quality."
"Pros:
Good location
It's grand staircase is quite beautiful
Cons:
Noise (literally by two busy roads)
Very soft mattress (watch out if you have lower back issues like I do)"
"This was honestly one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. I genuinely cannot believe this place is meant to be a 4-star hotel.
From the outside, it looks quite decent, and having a pool, gym and Starbucks on site gives the impression that it’s going to be a good stay. Unfortunately, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. As soon as we got to the room, it was obvious we’d massively overpaid.
The room was unbearably hot, and the window had clearly been left open because there was no air conditioning at all. Instead, there was a tiny fan that was completely useless and just seemed to push hot air around. I complained to the duty manager, who brought a stronger fan, but it barely helped. To make matters worse, there wasn’t even any complimentary tea or coffee in the room, which is the bare minimum you’d expect.
We then tried to complain, but got stuck in a ridiculous back and forth between the hotel and Hotels.com, each telling us to take it up with the other. After more than an hour of this, and feeling completely frustrated and let down, we ended up cancelling the booking and getting a refund.
I would never stay at a Village Hotel again after this. Really disappointing experience, and nowhere near the standard it claims to be."
"Unfortunately we arrived on an extremely hot today to be told the air conditioning was not working and there was a fan in our room. The a/c was expected to be fixed the following day but this did not happen and it was out for the 3 nights we were there. The room was really warm and it made for very uncomfortable sleeping. The hotel offered free parking to compensate but this did not feel proportionate given the impact on the experience.
The location was great for the variety of restaurants and shops."
"The staff were helpful, the environment was clean, and the stay was generally peaceful with no disturbances.
However, we were disappointed with the swimming pool facilities for families with children. There was no separate pool for kids, and the main pool was 1.3 metres deep. Surprisingly, the hotel had designated this pool for family and children's swimming sessions between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., which did not seem practical or safe. There were also no safety aids available, and no lifeguard
Apart from this concern, the amenities were good and met standard expectations."
"What a fantastic old building! The Coal Exchange had loads of character. The staff were really helpful and friendly. It was great value. We would stay again"
