"The parking was very secure in a garage under the hotel. They obviously power wash this area. I spoke with the maintenance guy and he confirmed they power wash it a lot. "

"The rooms weren’t large, but had a nice, comfortable King bed. A private bathroom with a tub and shower combo and toilet. A nice sized vanity was just outside the restroom. . The room also included a small fridge and microwave. The cost of the room was approximately $100 lower than brand-name hotels such as HI Express or Comfort Suites, but restaurants were very nearby in a nice shopping center and also at the wharf where you can enjoy seeing sea lions and otters.. I highly recommend The Monterey Surf Inn if you are looking for a hotel that is clean, comfortable, affordable, updated and convenient, without all the extra frills such as free breakfast. I would definitely stay here again and I’m pretty choosy."

"Portola is great! We stay there whenever we go to Monterey, the hotel is great, the employees couldn't be more helpful, the location is the best in walking distance to so many things which i really love. Don't hesitate on booking this place."

"Room was clean and cozy. Staff were friendly and helpful. I liked the location, there was so much within walking distance. Downsides: the old hotel has a weird layout, it’s hard to navigate and although there is an elevator, I still had to drag luggage up some stairs and through narrow corridors. No onsite parking so you have to pay extra to park, and again you have to carry luggage around."

"The dragging of bags in & out of buildings was terrible, we had to take an elevator & walk through 2 buildings to get to our room & go outside between buildings- some buildings did not connect making it even harder to find the room, would not recommend this for mostly this reason- people move & helpful, room clean & quiet"

"Small spaces , nice staff, clean, nice hotel, needs better beds. Pillows were not comfy : shower was tiny and not up to par, but room was small but clean and nice "
