A Franciscan mission that was built in the late 18th century and was never rebuilt after being abandoned after repeated Apache raids in the 19th century that killed farmers and ranchers in the area. #LikeALocal
Interior of the Church. In its time it would have been completely covered in white stucco and brightly painted. There were no pews as parishioners would have to stand or kneel during services.
One last look. This National Monument contains some very interesting early history. Some of it dates back to the arrival of the first Europeans to this area in the 1600's
The second Spanish Visita (visiting) church built on this site, it dates to between 1800-1822, it was abandoned in 1848 and became a National Monument in 1908.
Mission San José de Tumacácori was built in the 1750s, but by 1848, the mission was abandoned and began falling into severe disrepair. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Near Nogales, Arizona - 2016. #InStone #Parks Photo Challenge
