The bad: Probably my incorrect expectations but was expecting room AC for a 4* The ugly: Brave the unlit path, if you dare, to get to the Chineham shopping centre. No fault of the hotel but Hampshire County Council should sort this out as its an accident waiting to happen! "

"The hotel is located within easy walking distance of public transport. The room was comfortable and generally calm. Reception staff and cleaning staff were friendly and helpful. The gym is really excellent. Certainly one of the best I have used, well provisioned with excellent equipment, water, apples (a really nice touch) and towels. The only complaint is that we had to ask for the room to be 'refreshed'. "

"The hotel was ok. We booked an executive double room, areas of it could do with updating the sofa was very hard and stained. We were on tbe ground floor but we’rel left with no choice but to sleep with the patio door open as the heating was blasting out. The Spa is in need of some serious attention, the Jacuzzi has clearly been out of action for months, and it doesn’t look like anything is going to be done about fixing it any time soon. The changing rooms are in need of a deep clean and tbe chairs in the spa reception are all in need of replacement as all have ripped upholstery. One evening we went to the bar the glasses we were given were dirty (both had visible lipstick marks) breakfast was adequate for the price, but fairly basic. "

"It was a comfortable bed but lacking in other areas. After seeing the picture of the hotel it was disappointing to find our room was not in the main hotel but the garden Annex. This was an unpleasant looking concrete building detached from the hotel and quite a walk in poor weather. Also we were left with only one 2 even though it was a booking for 2. Also we were convinced that we had chosen the package with breakfast but it turned out this was not part of it. So I cannot comment on the food. "

"We had a wonderful stay at The Retreat. The room was spacious and comfortable and we appreciated the pantries with complementary drinks and snacks. The facilities are high quality, with an elegant feel without being dated. Food was good in both restaurants, as was breakfast. The spa was very relaxing. Staff were friendly and helpful. "

"Great location. Hotel looks new, everything clean, tidy and smart. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice - hot and cold. Next to Kassam Football Stadium and Hollywood Bowl, plus Frankie & Bennys. Quite busy whilst the football was on, but generally quiet location."

"Really lovely motel with lots of thoughtful touches to make the stay comfortable. The shower was incredible, like a therapy session in itself. We were less impressed by the adjoining diner. The food missed the mark a bit, although the restaurant itself and the ambience was good."

"Place was nice enough but spoilt by unruly children whose parents felt that getting them to chase sfter a ball and climbing all over the furniture in the restaurant was ok. Staff stood by and ignored this."
