"Great location a short walk from St Marks square, close to great restaurants, shopping, gondolas, private water taxi pickup area, Rialto, etc. Has a great terrace to sit and enjoy morning coffee or evening vino, listening to the church bells. Clean, comfortable and nice amenities. Easy check in/check out. The only downside (and we knew this when we booked it) was climbing those 72 stairs to get to the room. "

The Antico Portego is just down from the canals giving you a rare opportunity to enjoy Venice and not have to climb stairs with your luggage. "This was a GREAT hotel to stay in! The location, although it's a little far from the main tourist area in Venice (you can definitely walk there, though), was wonderful! Very peaceful and not crowded at all! The breakfast is extremely convenient, too. A couple of things I would have liked to know beforehand: this looks like a convent (not sure if it still is). Nuns provide you with breakfast, and there's a lot of religious paraphernalia. You also have a midnight curfew. You can pay a fee to have...

"The room was ready when we arrived a little early for check in which was very welcome. The staff are all very pleasant and helpful. The room was clean and had all we needed for a two night stay and a lovely view of the canal. There is no lift which didn't bother us with our small cases but it was a problem for a fellow guest with a big case. I am sure there is a light on the stairs but we couldn't find it when we were coming down early in the morning!"
